Robin Mead approaches the islands with that distinctly late-1970s tone: informed, measured, mildly enthusiastic, and very keen that you appreciate the fortifications. Expect chapters that balance landscape, architecture, wartime history, parish churches, and the quiet thrill of a coastline that has seen more than it lets on. There will be references to tides. There may be diagrams. There is almost certainly a sentence that begins with ?Strategically situated?? This is not a flashy travel guide promising cocktails and sunset selfies. This is serious island appreciation. It?s the kind of book that makes you feel slightly underdressed if you read it without at least a map and a cup of tea. You can almost hear the crunch of shingle under sensible shoes.
