This study examines the political, economic and social history of the Middle East since World War II, including the Arab Israeli conflict, the "oil weapon", and the violent upheavals in the Lebanon and Iran. It is designed for the GCSE Modern World History course. It begins with an examination of earlier history - in particular the Jewish settlement of Palestine and the emergence of Arab Nationalism. From here the authors discuss the creation of the State of Israel, Nasser's rise to power to Egypt, Suez, the Arab-Israeli wars, and the violent upheavals in the Lebanon and Iran. There are chapters on: The Middle East before 1945: imperialism versus nationalism; Palestine and the creation of the State of Israel; Nasser and the search for Arab unity; Israel and the Arabs; Egypt under Sadat; Lebanon falls apart; the rise of Saudi Arabia; Iran - the resurgence of Islam. It includes original source material and probing questions. Richard Lawless is the author of "The Middle East in the Twentieth Century"
