Synopsis

One of four titles in a series for local historians and all lovers of Britain's heritage, the main aim of which is to enable readers to look at the landscape and "read" its features with understanding. The book shows the effect different kinds of estates - the territories of local Iron Age leaders, the lands of Roman Villas, Saxon lordships and complex estates, royal castles, the lands of mediaeval lords and the domains of the aristocracy and gentry - have had on the landscape, and demonstrates what clues to look for. In their different ways, these owners have imposed their ideas, purposes and character on the landscape of their estates and upon their buildings, farms, woodlands, parks and gardens, and this, and in particular the evidence to be seen today, is the theme of the book. The main emphasis is on physical signs, but some documentary sources are also indicated.
