In the 1940s. a distinguished professor of botany, J W Heslop Harrison announced the discovery of rare plants on the Isle of Rum in the Hebrides. This was the last straw for his botanical colleagues - the latest of a series of discoveries that had aroused suspicion over the years, many botanists believing he had invented his discoveries. A young Cambridge Don infiltrated the professor's expeditions and accused him of faking his results. Then - silence. The report was buried for 50 years but has now been uncovered by Karl Sabbagh and used as a starting point in unravelling a story that has been called the 'Piltdown Man of Botany'.

Slight edge wear to jacket.Professor JW Heslop Harrison aroused suspicion of scientific fraud in the 1940s after numerous 'discoveries' of new plant species on Rum Island in the Hebrides. A young Cambridge man infiltrated one of the professor's expeditions and the report was damning, accusing the professor of sytematic and persistent faking of his results. The report was buried in a Cambridge library for nearly fifty years and the professor continued his career. The author unearthed the report and used it as a starting point in unravelling a story that has been called 'the Piltdown Man of botany'. He uses the Rum Island affair to explore the roots of scientific fraud in general and the pressures that can drive an emineent scientist to believe that faking the data is sometimes justified. The story of Prof. Heslop-Harrison, a distinguished academic, who strengthened the evidence for his theory of ice-age plant survival by "planting" flora in places where it had never been found before, and then "discovering" it. John Raven believed that he had caught him red-handed on the Isle of Rum in the summer of 1948. The scientific community closed ranks and Heslop-Harrison continued to dominate British botany for the next decade. [9780713992779]. N° de réf. du vendeur S48366
