David Cannadine is Director of the Institute of Historical Research, University of London. His previous books for Penguin include ORNAMENTALISM, CLASS IN BRITAIN and HISTORY IN OUR TIME. He is the general editor of both THE PENGUIN HISTORY OF BRITAIN and THE PENGUIN HISTORY OF EUROPE.
