Cloth, 4to, xxxvii, 505 pp. From the author's introduction: Some years before his death, John Bagford (1650-1716) wrote, 'For this twenty years last past I have made it my business to collect whatever I could procure relating to [printing]'.1 It was his intention to publish, one day, 'An Historical Account of the Art of Typography', but this book was apparently never completed. The materials he collected for it have survived, however, and are preserved in the British Library and Museum in three separate departments. The bulk of the printed materials from Bagford's Collection are now held by the BL Department of Printed Books, almost all of the manuscript material is in the Department of Manuscripts, and well over 1,000 engraved items have been transferred, through the years, to the Department of Prints and Drawings, where they have been distributed into a variety of portfolios. That part of the Collection now in the Department of Printed Books includes over 3,600 title-pages of English Printed Books (i.e., books printed in the British Isles in any language, and books printed elsewhere in English). Of these, 2,811 are from works already listed in the Pollard & Redgrave (PSTC) or Wing (WSTC) Short Title Catalogues, and these are represented in the catalogue below by a single entry which indicates the PSTC or WSTC reference number. Over 800 title-pages in the Collection are from works which are listed in neither STC, even though 544 of them were printed before 1701. All these are represented below by a number of entries, each of which has three parts: a label, the entry proper, and a citation - this last referring to volume and item in the Bagford Collection."
