Great dishes and bowls gorgeously decorated in blue or red; white ones where the decoration is all but hidden beneath the glaze to the casual viewer-all can delight and please now, just as when they were made. As Sir John Addis aptly remarks: 'The eye sometimes surfeited with the glories of blue-and-white can turn with special satisfaction to underglaze-red, not only to the spectacular tomato and cherry-reds, but also to the subtle shades of sepia, chestnut and grey'. This splendid group of porcelain is one of the most important gifts made in recent years to the British Museum. It is also most unusual in being 'tailor-made' over many years to amplify the existing collection. Sir John Addis's discriminat-ing choice of pieces sometimes neglected by the art-historian and connoisseur are pieces which can be enjoyed on their own merits and which also cast new. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 1st Edition. Very rarely available, this book catalogues the collection of early Chinese porcelain presented to the British Museum in 1975 by Sir John Addis (1914-1983), a career British diplomat and former ambassador to China. Written by John Addis himself, each of 22 pieces is described with minute attention to detail and with a passion and appreciation that would be expected from the man who assembled this collection over many years. In two parts: the first with the descriptions of the objects; the second a series of photographic plates, the majority in black and white with some examples in colour. A clean bright copy, unmarked, blue cloth bound with gilt lettering to spine, some very slight fading to the top and bottom of the covers front and back. Dust jacket complete and clean, no tears or marks, light shelf-wear with some scuffing to the corners and top edge. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1766350294241
