About the book >.>.> Art forgers have, in the twentieth century, become popular heroes, guerrillas in a war against the pomposity, pretension and greed of the art world. But the history of faking is more ancient and complex than this perception allows. In this book scholars with a variety of expertise provide new evidence about some of the most significant and spectacular forgers and forgeries. Other contributors go on to discuss the reception of fakes, in China as well as in Europe and North America, and to explore their significance as evidence for the history of taste, the development of the art market and the use of connoisseurship to establish social and intellectual status. In the end, though, fakes do more than upset the art market; they threaten to undermine our grip on reality itself. The volume ends by examining this problem in a challenging essay on authenticity, which questions whether the assumptions which allow us to distinguish the genuine from the false have any secure foundation.
