The idea of a Mother or Earth Goddess has become a rallying-point for a generation weary of male-oriented religions. But is the idea of Goddess at the dawn of civilization a historical fact, or just consoling fiction? In this text, historians and archaeologists speak about this topic. From predynastic Egypt to classical Greece and early North West Europe to the Celts, they review the most recent evidence.

While goddess mythologies proliferate and the public devours a stream of books by artists, psychotherapists, ecologists and enthusiastic amateurs, it is remarkable that the experts in the field of prehistory have remained largely silent. Did goddess worship really exist? What actually remains from the earliest cultures, and what can it tell us?
Writing for general readers, historians and archologists review the most recent evidence on this controversy from Predynastic and Early Dynastic Egypt; "Old Europe;" Early North West Europe; "Celtic" civilization; the Prehistoric Aegean; Malta; the Ancient Near East; Old Testament Israel; atalhyk; and Archaic Greece, so that readers can make up their own minds.
First book accessibly written for the general reader in which archaeologists and scholars researching early civilizations discuss the actual evidence [or lack thereof] of goddess worship in the ancient world. This is a new approach to an important and popular subject, and the first to incorporate archaeological evidence.
Lucy Goodison is an Honorary Research Fellow at University College London and has written several books on mythology and religion, specializing in the early Aegean.
Christine Morris is Leventis Lecturer in Greek Archaeology in the School of Classics, Trinity College, Dublin.
