Synopsis

Kate MacKay studied Fine Art drawing and painting at art school in Edinburgh. She graduated in 2004 with a sense that art, which had always been her drive, security, and happiness, would be best expressed in a career in community arts. She is a leading organiser in the Edinburgh based Alchemy Arts, which brings art into the community. Alchemy Arts had its first workshop at WOMAD, making musical instruments from old bike parts. Since then Alchemy Arts has developed a Scrap store and art studio in Edinburgh s seaside town Portobello. There are 20 artists who are involved and this is expanding all the time, creating murals, mosaics, costumes, films, events across Scotland all from discarded materials. Kate MacKay had her first etching exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 2007 Turn Your Fantasy into Reality Since then she has exhibited regularly in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London. Di Jennings has had a diverse career that has involved working in fashion design, wearable art, the film industry, community development and community arts. Underpinning her working life has been a consistent journey of personal and spiritual development. She has lived in an intentional community for 5 years; has participated in (and at times led) a range of transformational workshops and processes, and for the last 15 years has been a devotee of Spiritual Teacher, Avatara Adi Da Samraj.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Kate MacKay and Di Jennings are the creative spirits behind the Alchemy Arts organisation in Edinburgh, that collects waste and unwanted materials from businesses, runs workshops for adults and children, and then displays the results in parades and exhibitions in Edinburgh. They have collected their favourite projects in which fashion, useful objects for the home, and fancy dress are created from what would otherwise be put into the bin and end up either being buried in landfill or destroyed. The book has stylish photography by D.N Anderson at www.dnanderson.co.uk and Fraser Morgan. Readers will be able to discover how to transform old silk ties into designer dresses, make a top hat for a fancy dress party from old playing cards, how make a pillbox hat from plastic shopping bags and a book bag from a bedspread, and how to recycle items to make outfits that will make you look like Audrey Hepburn. Alchemy Arts aims to: divert waste from landfill, create socially aware inclusive arts projects, facillitate urban regeneration and inspire the creative transformation of materials, spaces and people
