The most praised Irish novelist of his generation, Higgins
worked in Africa as an engineer before beginning to write and it was
through the influence of Samuel Beckett that he first achieved publication
in Britain and America, his acclaim quickly lead to translation into all
principal European languages. His large novel, 'Balcony of Europe' was a
runner-up for the Booker Prize and is based on the time he spent in
Southern Spain.
SCENES FROM A RECEDING PAST constructs the adolescence and early adulthood of Dan Ruttle out of a variety of scenes and reminiscences about his life in Ireland, his time in a Catholic school, his first sexual experiences and his brother's mental breakdown.
