Now Philippe Jullian, who has led the way in the rediscovery of this strange episode in European art and literature has selected some of the most exciting examples of the work of the Symbolist painters and provided an account of their development and success. He also shows why they declined and were forgotten. Although they adopted no single style and founded no school, they formed part of an international movement which invented and then used~ relentlessly~a language which was common to them all. The painters of this movement, who formed the most homogeneous group, were the French and Belgians, and it is on these that philippe Jullian concentrates. They include Puvis de Chavannes, Gustave Moreau, Fernand Khnopff, Lévy~Dhurmer, Odilon Redon Maurice Denis and many others. The book is designed as a tour of an imaginary museum of Symbolist art in which the first room of Symbolist painting consists of the precursors including such videly diverse artists as Delacroix and Burne~Jones. The next rooms are peopled by the composers and writers whose ideas and attitudes inspired the Symbolists~among them Wagner, Edgar Allan Poe, Baudelaire and Flaubert. This presentation of the subject, in itself perhaps a Symbolist device, helps to bring this ?mportant movement alive. A final section conta?ns extensive notes on the pictures, and short biographical notes on each artist discussed. This is followed by a different group, the public for whom the Symbolist painters and writers worked. The discussion of the curious styles that developed in the latter half of the last century has overlooked the public which existed for these works, to whom the Symbolist programme was not only familiar but welcome. The book then goes on to examine the artists themselves~portraitists, painters of the fantastic, landscape artists and religious and other story~tellers The painters whose works are reproduced in the book have their place in these groups. Philippe Jullian has written a number of books on the writers and artists of the late nineteenth century. The most recent are Dreamers of Decadence, a survey of European Symbolism as a whole and the themes with which it was concerned, and D'Annunzio, a biography of the great Italian Symbolist poet.
