Opinionated and playful, this book gives readers an unprecedented insight into the work of one of the world's most successful contemporary designers, Ron Arad. In a long conversation with art critic Matthew Collings, Arad talks candidly about how his career has unfolded and the elements it now encompasses: product and furniture design, architecture, public sculpture and exhibitions. As well as rev the thinking and stories behind many of Arad's designs and projects, this discussion also touches on whether art and design can really mix, the nature of the client-designer relationship, how workshop projects feed designs for mass-production, the fun of working both with simple materials and cutting-edge technology, what makes good architecture, and refusing to decide whether you're a designer or an architect. Illustrated with over 350 images of his work (including specially commissioned pictures by Tom Vack) Ron Arad talks with Matthew Coll ings is the most complete - and most entertaining - overview of Arad's career to date.

Ron Arad was born in Tel Aviv in 1951 and in 1973 moved to London to attend the Architectural Association. In the early 1980s, he set up the design studio and workshop One Off Ltd with Caroline Thorman, which was superseded in 1989 by Ron Arad Associates, an architecture and design practice. In 1997, Arad was appointed Professor of Furniture Design at the Royal College of Art in London, and two years later became the college's Professor of Industrial Design. Arad has consistently created innovative furniture and product designs, many of which have been produced by some of the world's most important furniture manufacturers, including Cappellini, Kartell, Moroso and Vitra. He is also an active figure in the architectural field, producing a number of memorable building projects and public sculptures. Arad lives in London with his wife and their children. Matthew Collings was born in London in 1955. He attended the Byam Shaw School of Painting in the 1970s, and in 1992, completed an MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College. Collings has also written several books on art, including Blimey!, It Hurts, Art Crazy Nation, This is Modern Art, a monograph on Sarah Lucas and Matt's Old Masters.
