Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG+. Photos, Art, Drawings, Maps (illustrateur). 1st. In 1817 the first steam ships began to compete with traditional sailing vessels providing local services in the Southampton area. Captain 0'Brien, a Solent steam master at the time of writing this book, covers the earliest days of services based on the Solent, with extensions to the Isle of Wight, to the Channel Islands and across the Channel to France. He follows the development of the ships, services and companies from the early, frail and low powered paddle steamers until steam had proven its worth, in nautical terms, to about 40 years after the first ventured out on Solent waters. As well as describing the expansion of fleets and services, the author also covers tugs and excursion steamers, owners, masters and ship builders in the area, while three appendices provide fleet records, ship details and Weymouth steamers. A comprehensive record of this aspecty of steamship pioneering. First edition from David and Charles in 1973, 248 pages including notes and references, acknowledgements and index, 33 b/w illustrations (photos and art), 10 in text line drawings, two double page maps. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+ with tiny bump to lower front corner, internally excellent, no inscriptions. Price clipped colour art DJ also VG+ with light sunning to spine strip.
