No ownership marks. 191 pages clean and tight. The Liverpool & Manchester Railway, opened 150 years ago and marked by celebrations in the 'Rocket 150' spectacular in May 1980, was the first Inter-City railway in the world, intended to carry passengers in large numbers in addition to freight. The conception of a main line all-purpose railway was indeed Britain's gift to the world, and in this book O S Nock traces the story of its development up to the time when railways were the preeminent means of travel on land. But from a time that roughly coincided with the end of World War I a recession gradually set in, with the improvement and rapid development of other means of transport. In Great Britain some conservatism in management outlook, and statutory regulations, framed in a different era, hindered the first attempts to fight the increasing competition. With governmental appreciation, at last, of the vital role railways must continue to play in the life of the nation, the railways of Great Britain are now staging a remarkable revival, with passenger train services of a speed, frequency, and reliability that are second to none the world over, backed by some of the most advanced engineering technology applied to any industry today.
