Geach and Kenny selected from Prior's manuscripts those parts not superseded by his later publications, assembling a self-contained historical and critical study of the philosophical prehistory of contemporary logic. The book traces the treatment of propositions and terms from Aristotle through the medieval and early modern traditions to Whately, Mill, Keynes, Peirce, Frege, and Principia Mathematica, examining along the way such fundamental questions as the nature of propositions and sentences, the Aristotelian account of affirmation and denial, the classification of terms, the problem of general and singular reference, and the existential import of categorical propositions. Prior's approach throughout is scrupulously fair and historical rather than polemical--presenting the case for each position clearly before allowing the reader to judge--making the book both a valuable guide to the history of logic and an implicit argument for taking that history seriously as a guide to contemporary philosophical problems.
