paperback. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. Paperback. Etat : Good. Castaway and Wrecked by Rex Cowan, published by Duckworth in 1978, is a gloriously atmospheric collection of old shipwreck photographs and contemporary reports from the days when the Cornish coast and the Isles of Scilly had an unfortunate habit of turning perfectly respectable ships into local landmarks. Drawing heavily on the remarkable Gibson collection of historic wreck photographs, the book presents a series of maritime disasters in and around Cornwall and the Scillies, accompanied by contemporary newspaper accounts and related material. It covers nineteen wrecks, preserving not just the vessels themselves but the drama surrounding their final encounters with rocks, storms, reefs and the general refusal of the Atlantic Ocean to cooperate with shipping schedules. The photographs are a major part of the appeal. Taken in the era of glass plates and large cameras, many are astonishingly sharp and detailed, capturing wrecks, cliffs, rescue efforts and crowds of onlookers with the slightly eerie clarity that old photographs sometimes possess. There is something particularly compelling about a shipwreck photograph. A ship is designed to float. When it is lying sideways beneath a cliff, there is an immediate suspicion that something in the original plan has gone wrong. Among the vessels featured are substantial steamships and sailing vessels, including the Cunard steamer Malta , wrecked off Cape Cornwall in 1889, and the enormous seven-masted schooner Thomas W. Lawson , lost in the Scillies in 1907 with heavy loss of life. The latter was one of those extraordinary ships produced at the end of the great age of sail, when naval architects were apparently determined to find out exactly how many masts could be attached to one vessel before somebody objected. Seven, as it turned out, was apparently acceptable. The book also documents rescues and survival, including dramatic scenes of men being brought ashore by breeches buoy while seas break beneath them. These were not tidy museum-piece disasters. They were violent, chaotic events in which local coastguards, lifeboat crews and ordinary people often had to improvise quickly and dangerously. Modern maritime rescue can involve helicopters, GPS and instant communications. Victorian and Edwardian rescue could involve ropes, rockets, cliffs and an extremely strong belief that somebody ought to do something. The accompanying newspaper reports add another layer of fascination. They bring the wrecks back to life as current events rather than distant history, with all the urgency, detail and occasional melodrama of contemporary reporting. This gives the book the feel of a scrapbook assembled from a particularly bad century for maritime insurance. Published in 1978, Castaway and Wrecked is itself now a vintage maritime title, and at around 64 pages it is a compact but very visual book rather than an enormous technical history. It is ideal for dipping into, especially if you have ever found yourself staring at an old wreck photograph for far longer than seems entirely sensible. For readers interested in maritime history, Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, shipwrecks, coastal rescue, historic photography or the general spectacle of expensive vessels being defeated by geology, this is a very appealing little book. There is also a certain sobering charm in seeing ships that once represented immense engineering confidence reduced to twisted wreckage beneath cliffs. The Victorians and Edwardians built larger engines, stronger hulls and increasingly sophisticated navigation. The rocks remained unimpressed. Condition: Good. A sound used copy with normal signs of age and handling. Published in 1978, it has survived considerably more successfully than most of the vessels featured inside. ISBN: 0715611461. A fascinating collection of historic wreck photographs and newspaper accounts from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, full of ships, storms, rescues and the timeless lesson that the sea usually gets the final word. This copy is in FINE bright, tight and white condition in illustrated card wrappers as issued. The coasts of Cornwall and Scilly have long been a hazard to ships and those who sail in them, but is was not till the latter half of the nineteenth century that the moving details of shipwrecks and their aftermath were recorded for posterity.
