Synopsis

A fresh, fascinating collection of new writing on train travel and railway history, marking the 200th anniversary of passenger railways

From the Burmese highlands to the British Pennines, from a precipitous Indian coastal line to a continent-crossing African journey, The Untold Railway Stories spans rail routes across the UK, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and North America, revealing how train travel has shaped landscapes, lives and politics over two centuries.

Both a celebration and a reflection, it explores the ingenuity, ambition, beauty – and at times, the cost – of the railway age. Published to mark 200 years since the world’s first passenger line, this is a fresh look at the global legacy of the rails.

Dusk settles heavily on the suburbs of Dar Es Salaam. The world is evanescent. A forest of heads and arms crowds the open windows along the length of the train. The immediacy of the environment is astonishing. The tracks slice directly through a community that is coming alive at the end of a hot day, mere inches from people, houses, trees. I could knock hats off people’s heads as we pass. We see a game of football, a church service, herds of motorbikes, a muezzin peering at a Qur’an in a minaret, women carrying baskets of nuts and tubers on their heads, busy night markets. Instantly, the salt-sprayed and spice-seasoned Swahili Coast has been replaced by something more obviously African – a burnt-orange sky, the smell of woodsmoke, scrambled music, vultures silhouetted on the treetops.

Night has almost fallen. The air outside, now rushing past the gaping windows, is chilly. Passengers retreat inside. Windows slam shut. People are getting ready for a forty-eight-hour odyssey. The train turns slightly, arcing south. The last of the sun catches the track, like an ember spat from a fire. The metal seems for a moment to light up, marking a path of steel into the heart of Africa. Our journey to Angola has begun.
