Difficult as it may be to understand today, the Exploring English anthology of short stories was revolutionary when first published in 1967. For the first time the short story was to be taught as part of the English syllabus for the Intermediate Certificate, and for the first time students of English were introduced to the work of Irish writers such as Liam O Flaherty, Frank O Connor, Sean O Faolain, Mary Lavin, Brian Friel and Brendan Behan. Augustine Martin undertook the editing of this anthology with characteristic energy and Exploring English 1 has resonated with countless thousands of Irish students ever since. For many it provided a gateway to a lifetime of reading and enjoyment of literature. For others it was an icon of their school days with its unmistakeable angular cover design. It is still a cherished possession in many households, taken out occasionally and nostalgically to read a story or two, and perhaps even to read the accompanying notes so enlightening for some yet so challenging for others. So here is Exploring English 1 in its original format, just as you remember it. From First Confession to The Confirmation Suit to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty read once more and enjoy!

Augustine Martin was one of a small handful of pioneers who revolutionised the teaching of English in the 1960s. His energy and enthusiasm as an educator were imparted originally as a secondary school teacher at Mount St Joseph s in Roscrea and later as lecturer, subsequently as professor, of Anglo-Irish Literature at University College Dublin. Throughout his life he encouraged his students to commit to their own intellectual freedom. He was also editor of Soundings, which was reissued to huge popular acclaim in 2010. He died prematurely in 1995.
