Synopsis
The Baltic States, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were annexed by the Soviet Union after the negotiations between Hitler and Stalin in 1939. Britain and the US have never recognized the annexation. As perestroika spread through Eastern Europe, the Baltic States reasserted their independence but the Soviet response has been threats, blockades and the despatch of paratroops. In this book, the author travels through the region to describe the history and culture, to meet the people and to provide a background to events that are proving crucial to East-West relations.
