Synopsis
Totalitarianism remains a central concept in political theory, as relevant today in interpreting contemporary regimes in countries such as China, North Korea and Iraq as it was in the time of Hitler and Stalin. This book tries to resolve the long-running debates about what totalitarianism is or was, about how the term can be applied, and about what the future of the concept might be. Tormey looks in turn at the contributions of some of the best known writers on totalitarianism, such as Friedrich Hayek, Hannah Arendt, Carl Friedrich and Herbert Marcuse. He assesses the strengths and weaknesses of these accounts, and adds an interpretation of his own. This book is designed for students of political theory, the history of political thought and 20th century history.
