Cloth, 4to, vii, 246 pp. Reproduces the auction sale catalogues ( in some cases annotated with prices realized) for the sales of the following libraries: Francis Atterbury ( 5 March 1732/3); Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (31 July 1928); David Mallet (10 March 1766); Henry Fielding (10 February 1755); Hugh Blair (13 April 1801 and 8 April 1816); Oliver Goldsmith (12 July 1774). For each author there is also an introduction setting the sale in context, giving references to printed accounts of the library concerned and to surviving books from the collection, and to any special features of interest in the catalogue. Amory's section on the Henry Fielding sale had already been prepared with a view to separate publication when he was approached to edit this volume and his 17 page introduction includes a great deal of valuable information. In conseequence the introductions to the other sale catalogues in this volume have "in some degree [been] scaled up" from the norm for the series, making this an especially useful source for 18th century auction and library history.
