YASUSHI INOUE was born in 1907 and is one of Japan's leading writers. He has worked as a reporter and art critic as well as writing novels. His first books, THE HUNTING GUN and The Bull Fight, won him the Akutagawa Prize. His Tales of the Tempyo (1957) was awarded the Ministry of Education Prize for Literature in Japan, and for Tunhuang (1959) he received the Mainichi Press Prize. He is the author of several books of historical fiction set in China, as well as a serious study of Chinese history. His books have been translated into several European languages.
