Synopsis

Online answers as well as a selection of free supporting downloads are available from the Schofield & Sims website.

Key Stage 2 Comprehension provides a collection of stimulating texts, together with questions that both build comprehension skills and widen vocabulary. Children are encouraged to pay close attention to literal meaning, make inferences and deductions, observe how writing is structured and identify literary devices. Book 3 encourages children to look for more complex meanings. It includes:

  • adventure stories from Roald Dahl, Mark Twain, Anthony Buckeridge and Kenneth Grahame
  • a biography of Falklands soldier Simon Weston and further non-fiction from Jacqueline Wilson and Emmeline Pankhurst
  • evocative poems from some of the best British poets (such as Lewis Carroll, Robert Browning and Gina Douthwaite)
  • a letter written by Stevenson as a teenager and an introduction to the writing of J.R.R. Tolkien and William Shakespeare.

Gold Award

Good value comprehensive resource for home or school. It is well graded and cannot go wrong as it does all the work for the busy teacher. It is also easy to work through the books to the next level up. This contains a good mixture of subjects and different texts that the children found interesting and were absorbed in reading. A very useful resource with excellent grading criteria. --Primary Teacher Update Awards
