When The Teachings of don Juan was ppublished in 1962, Carlos Castaneda established himself as a leading spiritual teacher. In this, his first book, he described his extraordinary experiences with the Yacqui medicine man known as don Juan.
Available for the first time ever, Magical Passes is a practical guide to Castaneda’s techniques as taught to him by don Juan and the shamans of Ancient Mexico. For the first time he brings us the profound and practical applications of the wisdom of don Juan Matus.
Castaneda has called these teachings ‘Tensegrity. They are a modernized version of thousands of movements that were passed down from twenty-seven generations of sorcerers through don Juan. The Shamans of ancient Mexico discovered these movements in dreaming and called them magical passes, because of their positive affect on the psyche and physical body.
This book provides a real foundation for learning and practising these movements. The book goes further than the other books of Castaneda in featuring complete descriptions, photographs, and explanations of each movement, as well as explaining the philosophical framework in which the passes were discovered, taught and practised today.

Carlos Castaneda was the author of eleven international bestsellers describing his work with the Yaqui Indian Sage, don Juan Matus. He was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Less than 30 years later he was to become the perfect cult hero of disaffected Sixties youth. After completing a formal education he began an amazing journey to the Mexico-Arizona desert and travelled, with the guidance of the shamanic teacher, to other worlds of ‘non-ordinary reality’.
Thirty years ago, Carlos Castaneda published 'The Teachings of Don Juan', the story of a magical journey into the unknown. Under the tutelage of don Juan Matus, a Yaqui Indian sorcerer, the young anthropologist entered into another world and emerged to give readers glimpses of this ‘non-ordinary reality’. He wrote eight more books, most recently 'The Art of Dreaming' which described don Juan’s teaching methods and his sorcery arts.
Castaneda learned that for us to perceive any of the worlds that exist beside our own, not only do we have to covet them but we need to have sufficient energy to seize them. 'Magical Passes' offers the readers for the first time the key to this energetic conditioning. In this revolutionary new book, Castaneda reveals a series of body positions and physical movements that enabled various sorcerers, and their apprentices, to navigate their own sorceric journeys. By sharing this centuries-old wisdom, which comes from a tradition stretching back over 27 generations, Castaneda makes it possible for readers to travel to some of these other realms, which are as real, unique, absolute, and engulfing as our own world.
Castaneda has spent 10 years developing a more general, modern version of the ancient movements that he calls Tensegrity, a word borrowed from architecture which encompasses the words ‘tension’ and ‘integrity’. The movements described in 'Magical Passes' allow the reader to achieve new levels of physical, psychic and intellectual vitality, to travel the same road as the Mexican sorcerers and their apprentices – in addition to Carlos Castaneda, the apprentices of don Juan include Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs – and to honour don Juan’s quest while embarking on their own exploration into unknown worlds.
In 'Magical Passes', Castaneda offers both a philosophical history of magical passes and an innovative, easy to understand instructional format, complete with over 450 computer, generated illustrations. Written with humour, clarity, and authority, 'Magical Passes' further illuminates the true meaning of sorcery and magic.
PRAISE FOR CARLOS CASTANEDA
“We are incredibly fortunate to have Carlos Castaneda’s books … one can’t exaggerate the significance of what he has done.”
NEW YORK TIMES
“Castaneda has become one of the godfathers of the New Age movement … He is addressing the central issues of our time.”
LOS ANGELES TIMES
“Castaneda’s sanity … compels us to believe that don Juan is one of the most extraordinary figures in anthropological literature, literature, a Neolithic sage. It helps us to accept, from the continent we stole, a mysterious gift of wisdom.”
LIFE
“It’s impossible to view the world in quite the same way after reading him … If Castaneda is correct, there is another world, a sometimes beautiful and sometimes frightening world, right before our eyes at this moment – if only we could see.”
