In putting together these Learical Lyrics and Puffles of Prose (a booktitle which Lear himself thought of using) Brian Alderson has tried to show something of the range of bosh that Edward Lear actually produced. As well as the limericks and nonsense songs that almost everyone knows about, there are less familiar poems, rhymes and drawings, togher with a few 'eggstrax' from his letters and a dictionary of his 'wurble inwentions'. The artist's gloomy experiences among mucilaginous monks in Athos, and burst water-pipes at Walton-on-Thames are recounted with the same strange blend of exhiliration and sensitivity that he brought to the conversation between Mr. Daddy-long-leds and Mr. Floppy Fly, or the adventures of aged Uncle Arly - clipfombious to the last degree.
