Hardback. Etat : Good. The Observer?s Book of Wild Flowers (1975) by W. J. Stokoe ? Frederick Warne & Co. There is something deeply satisfying about a small field guide. No charging cable. No login. No software update. No message asking whether you would like to accept cookies before being allowed to identify a buttercup. Just a book. The Observer?s Book of Wild Flowers , written by W. J. Stokoe and published by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1975, is one of those wonderfully compact little reference books designed to be taken outside and actually used, which is a rather radical idea by modern standards. The purpose is simple enough: help the reader identify the wild flowers encountered in fields, hedgerows, woodland, verges and other places where plants insist on growing without being asked. This is part of the famous Observer?s Book tradition, a series beloved for packing a surprising amount of information into a book small enough to fit into a pocket, coat, rucksack or glove compartment. And wild flowers are an ideal subject for it. You spot something purple growing beside a path. Is it a violet? A campion? Something with an alarming Latin name? Rather than photographing it and hoping an app does not confidently identify it as a tropical houseplant, you can simply open the book and investigate. Imagine that. Published in 1975, this edition comes from an era when nature study was still proudly practical. People were expected to go outdoors, look at things, compare shapes and colours, and eventually develop enough knowledge to recognise a plant without first requiring mobile reception. There is a pleasing slowness to that process. You notice the leaf shape. You examine the flower. You check the habitat. You make a decision. Then, if you are anything like most amateur naturalists, you change your mind three times and eventually ask somebody else. The book is both useful and nostalgic, offering a snapshot of British natural history publishing during the 1970s. It belongs to a time when pocket nature guides were familiar companions to walkers, schoolchildren, ramblers and anyone who occasionally disappeared into the countryside carrying sandwiches in greaseproof paper. For collectors, Observer?s Books have a charm all their own. Their small format, practical illustrations and straightforward approach make them attractive little survivors from a more analogue age of hobbies. No notifications interrupt the identification process. No battery runs out halfway across a meadow. And if you drop it in long grass, it will remain exactly where you left it rather than trying to connect to Bluetooth. This copy is in Good condition , making it a nice usable example for anyone wanting a vintage field guide rather than a pristine museum piece. At around fifty years old, it has survived extremely well for a book whose natural habitat was likely to involve pockets, backpacks, damp benches and enthusiastic fingers pointing at illustrations. Ideal for wild-flower enthusiasts, walkers, collectors of Observer?s Books, natural-history fans or anyone who would like to rediscover the ancient pastime of looking at plants and actually knowing what they are. Also useful for those moments when someone says, ?What?s that flower?? and you would like to answer with something more authoritative than, ?One of the yellow ones.? Sold by Crappy Old Books , where we support both biodiversity and the continued survival of small books that know more about hedgerows than we do. ISBN: 0723200440 Condition: Good.
