Synopsis

This work attempts to address the common and important cardiac emergencies with emphasis on the practical aspects. The possible emergencies range in scale from symptom-provoking but generally non-hazardous problems to potentially catastrophic events. The first three chapters cover cardiac emergencies in the neonatal period, in childhood and in pregnancy. Ischaemic heart disease is a common cause of cardiac emergencies and this subject is dealt with under the headings of unstable angina, acute myjocardial infarction, acute interventions during infarction, thrombolytic therapy, post-infarction angina and cardiogenic shock. The "general medical" cardiovascular emergencies are considered under the headings of hypertensive emergency, acute cardiac tamponade, acute pulmonary embolism, acute pulmonary oedema, acute pericarditis and mycarditis and infective endocarditis. Surgical aspects are dealt with as acute cardiac trauma, acute prosthetic valve malfunction, aortic dissection and the use of the intra-aortic balloon pump. Practical matters which may face anyone dealing with emergency cardiology are covered, with recent pharmalogical approaches outlined. Where possible and appropriate, authors have been asked to provide a flow chart for diagnosis and one for management.
