Terrain modelling, or digital ground modelling, has been in use for many years. However, the advent of electronic tacheometers, databases and algorithms for the storage and processing of data now enables these techniques to be more widely available. This is an examination of current developments in terrain modelling and its application to civil engineering design, land and hydrographic surveying, development planning and computer visualization for civil and military applications.
