These three volumes contain the proceedings of a March 2004 conference organized to commemorate the geotechnical scholarship of the late Alec Skempton. The first volume begins with discussion of Skempton's contributions to engineering geology, slope stability, and the history of civil engineering; as well as the process of archiving Skempton's papers and those of his collaborative colleague Alan Bishop. This volume also contains the 33 keynote presentations on recent advances in geotechnics, covering such topics as developments in understanding soil behavior, ground performance and building response due to tunneling, comparative study between liquefaction and instability of sand, inherent anisotropic stiffness of decomposed tuff and alluvium, and mechanical behavior of highly fissured sheared clay shales, to cite a few. The next volume contains the 55 papers from the themed sessions on foundations, slopes and embankments, ground performance, and the influence of geology on civil engineering and also includes a bibliography of Skempton's published works. Volume Three is a supplemental containing three papers on back analysis of two case histories of temporary slope stability in London Clay, the history of the design and analysis of slopes and embankments, and a hollow cylinder apparatus to study the cyclic loading behavior of dry granular material.
