Synopsis

The dramatic story of Lord Louis Mountbatten and his ill-fated ship; As captain of the Kelly, Mountbatten was at the height of his naval fame. He commanded a crack destroyer flotilla and the Kelly was one of the latest ships in the Royal Navy, manned by the pick of the Senior Service's finest officers and ratings. But he had two fatal weaknesses - his wife, the spoilt Edwina, and his overweening ambition. Originally a Battenberg, Mountbatten had been forced to change his name following press attacks over his half-German ancestry. Hitler now wanted to destroy this 'traitor' and 'renegade', this 'turncoat German', but Mountbatten would not even let Hitler stand in his way. The Kelly survived the severest blows - striking a mine in 1939 and nearly sinking after being torpedoed in 1940. But when, south of Crete in May 1941, an attack of dive bombers rolled the Kelly over, her luck had finally run out.
