Synopsis

Deputy Marty Hopkins is on day shift, back on the job after only a brief rest. This time the case involves the death of Zill Corson in an apparent arson-attack at his hunting cabin. When Marty starts to make inquiries, it emerges that Zill had shared his cabin with Don Foley, a former sheriff in the department with a grudge against Marty. And Marty has issues of her own to face in investigating the fire. When she was 12, her father died in a car that crashed and burst into flames. As she confronts her demons, it becomes clear that this is a much more complex - and dangerous - case than first appeared.

P. M. Carlson is the author of eight Maggie Ryan mysteries and several crime short stories, as well as Gravestone, Bloodstream and Deathwind, the first titles in this series of Marty Hopkins mysteries. She has been nominated for a number of awards, including an Anthony for Murder is Academic and an Edgar for Murder in the Dog Days. She lives in New York State with her husband and a Belgian sheepdog named Poirot.
