Stayforth House, a minor, but attractive, English country house, had been passed to Jerome Gerrard on his father's death, whilst his younger brother, Charles, was left to make his own way in life - a task made more difficult when he chose to become an author. Jerome suggested that Charles and his wife live rent-free on his estate in Mallorca, an offer they gratefully accepted. But Jerome died and relations between them and Heloise, Jerome's widow, became less amiable than usual when Heloise demanded they pay rent. Dora Coates, who had once worked at Stayforth House, called in at the Spanish house, thinking that Heloise lived there. It was a visit that was to have far-reaching effects when Dora drowned in Llueso Bay in circumstances that might, or might not, be suspicious. With his customary reluctance, Enrique Alvarez sets out to solve the mystery, but as usual he arouses Superior Chief Salas' ire by refusing to accept the obvious.
