The Revd Canon Michael Paternoster (b. 1935) is an Anglican priest, author, and ecumenist known for his contributions to the study of death and the afterlife, as well as his long service in the Scottish Episcopal Church. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he was ordained in 1961 and served his curacy in the Diocese of Southwark before moving to Scotland. Paternoster’s ministry is defined by a deep engagement with contemplative spirituality and the Orthodox tradition. He served for many years as the General Secretary of the Fellowship of St Alban and St Sergius, a role that fostered closer ties between the Anglican and Eastern Orthodox churches. His published works, including Thou Art There Also (1967) and Stronger than Death (1972), are noted for their theological depth and sensitivity to the ‘four last things’. A long-time associate of the Sisters of the Love of God (SLG), he has frequently contributed to the Fairacres Chronicle, bridging rigorous academic theology and the lived experience of prayer.
