Synopsis

Locating Migrating Media details the extent to which media productions, both televisual and cinematic, have sought out new and cheaper shot locations, creative staff, and financing around the world. The book contributes to debates about media globalization, focusing on the local impact of new sites of media production. The books chapters also question the role that film and television industries and local and regional governments play in broader economic develop and tax incentive schemes.

While metaphors of transportation, mobility, fluidity and change continue to serve as key concepts and frames for understanding contemporary media industries, products and processes, the essays in this book look to local spaces, neighborhoods, cultural workers and stories to ground the global—that is, to interrogate the effect of media globalization before, during and after film and television shooting and onsite production.

By locating migrating media, these chapters seek to determine the political, economic and cultural conditions that produce contemporary forms of televisual and cinematic storytelling, and how these processes affect the inhabitants, the look and the very geopolitical future of local communities, neighborhoods, cities and regions. The focus on relocated screen production highlights the act of film- and television-making, both aesthetically and economically. To locate migrating media is therefore to determine the political and cultural economies of globalized sets and stages, be they in new studios or on city streets or, perhaps most importantly, in our imaginations.

Tamara L. Falicov is Associate Dean for Research in the Arts and the Humanities, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of Film and Media Studies at the University of Kansas, USA, as well as affiliated with the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She is the author of The Cinematic Tango: Contemporary Argentine Film (2007).

Ben Goldsmith has been a pioneer in the field of green investment, as well as a leading light in the rewilding movement in Britain and Europe. Ben and his wife, Jemima, are in the process of rewilding their own farm in South Somerset, and Ben has been involved in the establishment of numerous environmental initiatives, including the Environmental Funders' Network, the Conservative Environment Network, Rewilding Britain, the Beaver Trust and the Conservation Collective, a growing network of locally-focused environmental foundations around the world. Ben was appointed a Director of the UK Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for five years, until 2022. In that role, he successfully advocated for a number of ground-breaking environmental restoration policies, including the new Environmental Land Management scheme, which links all agriculture subsidies with stewardship and restoration of nature, the Nature for Climate Fund and the Species Reintroductions taskforce.

Greg Elmer is Bell Globemedia Research Chair and Director of the Infoscape Centre for the Study of Social Media at Ryerson University, Canada. His research and teaching focus on new media and politics, theories and methods in social media studies, surveillance theory, and media globalization.
