David is then torn from Canterbury and the Kent countryside when he starts at the now famous RSPCA Harmsworth Hospital in London. David battles through the urban jungle and shares with us the blossoming of what will become his two major passions - working with small animals, and the RSPCA. However, the town throws up just as many surprises as the country: a tortoise chewed on by a Labrador, a parrot who thinks it's a Siamese cat and a gerbil sucked up by a vacuum cleaner. The lad-about-town's skirmishes with women continue to dominate his private life with hilarious - though never very permanent - consequences. Many years later David Grant will return and become chief vet at the Harmsworth.
