Synopsis

Captain Slaughterboard is the most ferocious and wicked pirate you could ever imagine. He likes nothing better than cutting people up with his cutlass or making them walk the plank. Then one day, on a remote island, he spies a strange Yellow Creature - and from that time on, he's a changed man. How he loves the Yellow Creature! They become the best of friends, always together, sailing the oceans. But will Captain Slaughterboard ever drop anchor for good? First published over sixty years ago, this swashbuckling pirate fantasy by the author and illustrator of the classic Titus Groan trilogy has been newly designed in this delightful picture book edition.

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. Mervyn Peake (illustrateur). New Edition. First impression of this new edition, with a new foreword by Fabian Peake, with the original illustrations by Mervyn Peake, published in 2001. Beautiful full-page double-page colour illustrations throughout. The book was originally published in 1939 - however, the bulk of that first edition was destroyed in the Blitz, as the warehouse of Country Life was graised to the ground. This occurred just as "Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor" was about to be published. Only a small number of review copies had been sent out and the book was not reprinted until after the war in 1945. The book is unpaginated. ***This copy is in lovely condition - near fine in pale-blue boards with black outline titles on the spine and an outline illustration on the front board. The boards are quite clean, with just a few coloured marks on the front board (please see scans). Head and tail of spine uncreased. Corners sharp - just a slight crease to the top corner of the front board. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. No foxing to the interior pages, and no offsetting to the endpapers. Pages clean. No creasing and no tears. ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which is complete with no significant faults - just some light creasing to the top edge of the front panel. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £12.99. No serious creases, and no chips or tears. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***307mm x242mm. Unpaginated. ***'Mervyn Laurence Peake (9 Jul 1911 - 17 Nov 1968) was an English writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. He is best known for what are usually referred to as the Gormenghast books. The four works were part of what Peake conceived as a lengthy cycle, the completion of which was prevented by his death. They are sometimes compared to the work of his older contemporary J. R. R. Tolkien, but Peake's surreal fiction was influenced by his early love for Charles Dickens and Robert Louis Stevenson rather than Tolkien's studies of mythology and philology. Peake also wrote poetry and literary nonsense in verse form, short stories for adults and children, stage and radio plays. Peake first made his reputation as a painter and illustrator during the 1930s and 1940s, when he lived in London, and he was commissioned to produce portraits of well-known people. For a short time at the end of World War II he was commissioned by various newspapers to depict war scenes. A collection of his drawings is still in the possession of his family. Although he gained little popular success in his lifetime, his work was highly respected by his peers, and his friends included Dylan Thomas and Graham Greene. His works are now included in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, the Imperial War Museum and The National Archives. ***"Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor" is a darkly humorous children's picture book written and illustrated by the British author Mervyn Peake and first published by Country Life in 1939. It was his first published work. The book is notable for Peake's poetic style and his fine illustrations of the many fantastical beasts on the island.' (Wiki) ***A near fine copy of this re-issue of "Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor. Of interest to collectors of the illustrative work of Mervyn Peake. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de réf. du vendeur 9387
