Today's wars leave a crippling legacy of deprivation and suffering, of physical and structural injustice, long after they submit to peaceful resolution. Survivors of war must find ways to live with the stultifying injustices littering their past and haunting their present, injustices committed preceding, during and sometimes even after conflict. Confronting the vexed challenge of re-marrying peace with justice out of the morass of war's injustices is the complex but imperative task facing post-conflict societies and the international community today. It is a challenge that will linger for decades as the horrors of contemporary wars continue apace around us. This book explores the dimensions of injustice associated with contemporary conflict in order to understand the exigencies of restoring justice in the process of post-conflict peacebuilding. It argues for a holistic and integrated approach to restoring justice. It argues that we must address all three faces of injustice embedded in conflict, symptom, consequence and cause. Consequently we must rebuild all three faces of justice, legal, rectificatory and distributive, in the aftermath.
