A horror story with a cruelty-to-animals theme. The boys who shoot an old man's dog, just for spite, find that before the day is ended there will be plenty more blood spilt. From the author of ROAD KILL and ONLY CHILD.

The old man hears them before he sees them, the three boys coming over the hill, disturbing the peace by the river where he's fishing. He smells gun oil too, too much oil on a brand-new shotgun. These aren't hunters, they're rich kids who don't care about the river and the fish and the old man.
Or his dog. Red is the name of the old man's dog, his best friend in the world. And when the boys shoot the dog—for nothing, for simple spite—he sees red, like a mist before his eyes. And before the whole thing is done there'll be more red. Red for blood...NOW A FILM BY LUCKY McKEE & Trygve Allister Diesen! Starring Brian Cox, Amanda Plummer, Robert Englund, Noel Fisher, Kyle Gallner, Shiloh Fernandez, and Kim Dickens.
Jack Ketchum is the pseudonym for a former actor, singer, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk. He is also a former flower child and baby boomer who figures that in 1956 Elvis, dinosaurs and horror probably saved his life. His first novel, Off Season, prompted the Village Voice to publicly scold its publisher in print for publishing violent pornography. He personally disagrees but is perfectly happy to let you decide for yourself. His short story The Box won a 1994 Bram Stoker Award from the HWA and he has written ten novels, including The Girl Next Door, Off Season, and Stranglehold. His stories are collected in The Exit At Toledo Blade Boulevard and Broken on the Wheel of Sex.
