Janet Travers is overjoyed on winning a place in the local grammar school. Painfully aware of the sacrifices her family makes, and determined to do well, soon she befriends a Jewish girl. At 17 she falls in love and plans to marry her friend's brother, but a Catholic wife is out of the question.
