Reviews A CIA plot to spread disinformation among Soviet southern r epublics is the brainchild of aging CIA operative Edward Stone, who neglects to inform his superiors of his plans. Stone recruits bored CIA Istanbul bureau chie f Alan Taylor and fledgling CIA agent Anna Barnes, and the three of them set off to stir up the Uzbeks, Azerbaijanis, and Armenians. Ultimately, the CIA discove rs Stone's adventure and scrubs the operation, leaving Taylor and Barnes to fend for themselves. At no time does this come across as a serious spy thriller. The main characters, Taylor and Barnes, are not very appealing, and the plot sugges ts little in the way of intrigue and excitement. If author Ignatius intended to write a hair-raising, action-packed spy thriller, he has missed the mark. His Ag ents of Innocence (LJ 9/15/87) was a success; Siro is not. Previewed in Prepub A lert, LJ 12/90.-- Brian Alley, Sangamon State Univ. Lib., Springfield, Ill. Alan Taylor, CI A chief in Istanbul, sentimental nihilist and professional malcontent, enlists n ervy, vulnerable Anna Barnes, fresh from Harvard's department of Ottoman history , on a mission to destabilize Moslem-dominated Soviet Central Asia. Together the y recruit a crude, burned-out ex-CIA man in Athens, an Armenian dissident intell ectual and an Uzbek ex-Nazi agent who has been living among Orthodox Jews in Bro oklyn. But Taylor, who keeps overstepping company rules and ethical norms, saves. N° de réf. du vendeur 1369ad
