Soft Cover Full Gloss. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. ## The Truth About Dogs by Volker Kriegel, 1990 ## ## THIS BOOK: was classified as VERY GOOD. This book is the 1990 edition. First published in 1989. The inside is clean and tidy, with no foxing or bumping. Slight discolouring to the page edges.## ## The trenchant and beguiling masterpiece you are about to enjoy has three shameful British prejudices to overcome. The first is our sturdy belief that the Germans, while objects of ripe delight in themselves, are incapable of being funny. The second is our shockingly tolerant notion that a collection of badly drawn cartoons can be just as amusing as a book of well-drawn ones. And the third is our incomprehensible addiction to books about cats. ## ## The British have always asserted that the German sense of humour is about as real as the Swiss Navy (though I've always assumed that the prudent Swiss kept a small flotilla tucked away somewhere in the Mediterranean, just in case). This fairly harmless contention can be comforting, even necessary ? look, they may have all the Deutschmarks and most of the BMWs, but we're the ones with the sense of humour; yet it's getting harder and harder to defend. For many years my prejudice was just as reliable as the next person's, despite growing evidence that the Germans had figured out how to laugh. At first, we admitted that, oh, sure, they knew about being satirical (Grosz, Brecht/Weill and all that). Irony? Yes, they might have mastered that. OK, they could be scurrilous. Gently droll? Well, perhaps so (didn't Heimat surprise us?). Ah, but could they be funny? This zig-zagging tactical retreat went on for a long time and depended on the constant redefinition of funny in terms of what the Germans were not. I finally surrendered this increasingly hopeless position. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. paperback. Etat : Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
