He was educated at Cambridge University and then travelled widely in Europe. On his return he wrote "The Bride of Abydos" and "The Giaour". The real value of his poetry lies in his evocation of past civilizations. He die in 1863.

Yet he produced some of the most daring and exuberant poetry of the Romantic age, from 'To Caroline' and 'To Woman' to the satirical English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, his exotic Eastern tales and the colourful narrative of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, the work that made him famous overnight and gave birth to the idea of the brooding Byronic hero.

Lord Byron (1788-1824) - Byron (of Rochdale), George (Gordon), 6th Baron. The most notorious Romantic poet and satirist. He was among the most famous of the English 'Romantic' poets; his contemporaries included Percy Shelley and John Keats. He was also a satirist whose poetry and personality captured the imagination of Europe. His major works include Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-18) and Don Juan (1819-24). He died of fever and exposure while engaged in the Greek struggle for independence.
