In this novel, Dickens describes one boy growing up in a world which is by turns magical, fearful and grimly realistic. In a book which is part autobiographical, the novelist transmutes his life-experience into a series of comic and sentimental adventures.

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1812 and died in 1870. When he was ten he and his family moved to Camden Town in London. As a result of his father being imprisioned for debt, Dickens was sent to work at a boot-blacking factory for ten hours a day at the age of twelve. The conditions in the factory were abominable and the way the working class lived and the situations they endured would become major themes in his books. In his early twenties Dickens's first book was published, The Pickwick Papers. It brought him immediate fame which continued throughout his rich career and life and well beyond. He is remembered by many as the greatest writer of his time. Among his most well-known novels are Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol. Philip Reeve is the author of the bestselling Mortal Engines, which was shortlisted for several awards and was the Gold Award winner at the Nestle Smarties Book Prize 2002 and the winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year at the 2003 Awards.
