After the close of the First World War, the British motorcycle industry rose to prominence as British motorcycles became almost unbeatable in competitions. However, a shortage of these new model bikes pushed prices to a premium and most people were forced to settle for pre-war designs. These high prices led to greater competition, and greater competition lead to swifter and more innovative development. By the mid 1920s the overhead valve engine came into its own, with enhanced performance, and then the overhead camshaft engine allowed even greater potential. Internal expanding hub brakes kept safety in step with increased performance. The later 1920s brought about further significant changes when wired-on tyres came into general use and electric lighting replaced acetylene lights. Appearance was improved when chromium plating took the place of nickel and the saddle tank rendered the old flat tank superfluous.

In this compact yet richly detailed volume, Jeff Clew examines the golden era of British motorcycle development between the two World Wars. After the First World War, British motorcycles gained popularity and performance, dominating competitions and capturing the imagination of the growing public. Clew traces the evolution from pre-war designs to the innovations of the 1920s, including the rise of overhead valve and camshaft engines, improved braking systems, and the transition from acetylene to electric lighting. ## The book also highlights aesthetic and practical changes?chromium plating, wire-on tyres, and the introduction of the saddle tank?all of which contributed to the distinctive look and feel of vintage machines. Illustrated with period images and written with the insight of a lifelong enthusiast, Vintage Motorcycles is a must-have for collectors, restorers, and anyone drawn to the craftsmanship and character of early British motorcycling. ## ## Shire Books are a much-loved series of compact, illustrated guides that capture the rich tapestry of British heritage?everyday objects, crafts, architecture, rural life, and social customs that have shaped the nation's character. Initially designed for curious minds and collectors, these paperbacks have evolved into treasured resources for museum professionals, historians, teachers, and enthusiasts who appreciate the nuance and beauty in the ordinary. Each title delves into a specific topic?from old farm implements and Victorian chemists to vintage motoring memorabilia, canal architecture, woodworking tools, and bygone domestic gadgets. With sharp focus and approachable language, Shire Books offer not encyclopaedic depth, but a curated entry point that evokes nostalgia, curiosity, and connection to Britain's material past.## ## Their compact format, usually in A5 or smaller, makes them ideal for browsing or research, while the plentiful illustrations?often archive photos, line drawings, or colour images?add visual context that complements the text. Many editions are part of thematic series, such as Shire Albums, Discovering Series, Shire Archaeology, and later, the Shire Library. The series' distinctive numbered spines and clean cover designs have become collectable in their own right. Whether you're interested in historic tools, regional architecture, folk traditions, or industrial curiosities, Shire Books offers bite-sized insights with a big heart. They serve as windows into a Britain shaped by craftsmanship, local trades, innovation, and changing social norms, making them perfect additions to any specialist bookshop, personal library, or collector's shelf.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
