Synopsis

This book traces the architectural and socio-economic history of Glasgow from its merchant origins, through 19th- and 20th-century decline, to its present regeneration. Illustrated accounts by leading architectural and civil engineering historians describe the phases of growth and change, and the building ventures through which these changes were realised. They outline the current conservation programme for the preservation of former tenement slums, the grander suburbs and the historic merchant centre, and reveal why Glasgow is now considered "the finest surviving example of a great Victorian city". Concentrating more on the developing form of the city than on architechture of individual buildings this book should provide a useful case study for students of urban design, architecture and planning.
