An accessible introduction to historical linguistics, this work contains many examples and problem sets/exercises to which the students can apply the principles and procedures outlined in each chapter. It deals with essential areas of historical linguistics: grammaticalization, sociolinguistic treatment of linguistic change, remote genetic relationship; areal linguistics and linguistic prehistory.
