Synopsis

This book describes the religious rivalry of Tudor times and the reasons why some Catholics wanted to overthrow Parliament and James 1. The author summarizes the events leading up to the discovery of Guy Fawkes and the other plotters on the night of 4 November 1605. The author gives an account of the Gunpowder Plot, the oath sworn by the plotters at Robert Catesby's house, the plot, the tunneling, Fawkes' mistrust of Francis Tresham - the supposed betrayer - and the arrest of the plotters by the king's soliders. The book concludes with a description of the celebrations which took place on 5 November 1605 and stresses the historial significance of Guy Fawkes Day and the burning of the "Guy".
