Synopsis
Each title in this series takes one simple scientific principle as a basis for explaining the workings of a selection of everyday gadgets and machines. The illustrations aim to de-mystify the scientific theory and expose the workings of each machine. Focusing on the wheel, this book describes its use in many familiar machines incorporating axles, pulleys, cams, cranks and gears. Simple language is used to explain inertia and centrifugal force. The applications of the wheel which are examined include winches, windmills, steering wheels, sewing machines, record players and roller blinds.
