Learning, which is implicitly at the heart of schooling, is explicitly discussed as a highly complex phenomenon. This perspective highlights how the enduring emphasis on control, dependency and expedience denies students the challenging experiences essential to nurture their critical thinking. Rita S. Brause is Professor of Education in the Graduate School of Education of Fordham University where she has recently been appointed Director of Teacher Education for New Teachers. She teaches courses studying theories of language and learning as these influence educational practices. Enduring Schools draws on more than twenty years of her experiences as a teacher, teacher-educator, researcher, and consultant at all levels of schooling.
